Summary
Built specifically to store the owner’s two Porsches, this angular addition is emphatically contemporary and designed in close dialogue with the color and form of the existing home.
Idea
How can two structures—one old, the other new—appear separate yet related? This project investigates that question as well as the effect an auxiliary building can have on the experience of a place. And when a structure is primarily occupied by cars, as opposed to people, how can architecture create an engaging and thoughtful, but ultimately restrained, building?
Expression
The structure shelters two vehicles and is designed with as much attention to scale and precision as the cars themselves. The size of the volume lends a gravitas befitting of the luxury sportscars within it while doubling as a privacy screen for the main residence. The muted black exterior relates to the shed style era of the existing house, while inside, the decorative board-and-batten wall and cove light create a subtle textural backdrop for the luxurious cars. An integrated window facing the house adds a moment of flourish while revealing the otherwise restrained interior.
Impact
The volume’s distinct, sharply angled roofline and lofty scale allow it to read as a new, discrete building, without breaking its formal connection to the existing house, which features a similarly angular envelope. The shared exterior palette reinforces the new structure’s relationship to the existing house. The result is a dynamic addition that blurs the boundary between new and old.
