Pre-War Renovation
a study in contrasts

Summary

This apartment is a palimpsest; the renovation highlights the original, the old, and the imperfect, while bringing a precise, distinctly contemporary aesthetic. Our approach relied on careful interventions that highlight rather than distract from the treasured details.

Idea

There is a finite number of historic apartments in New York, and we steadfastly believe that everything should be done to preserve them. We also recognize the need to update them, and in doing so we can in fact safeguard the future of these architecturally and culturally rich properties.

Expression

An intricately carved marble fireplace anchors the living room. It’s flanked both by elegant new bookshelves and the original slightly flourished millwork—the first of many delicate contrasts throughout the renovation. Finely articulated metal windows cast light on the original wood floors, while soft neutrals add a layer of warmth to the revitalized interior.

Impact

We see this project as a case study in how historic structures and contemporary renovations can not only coexist, but form a symbiotic relationship that amplifies the strengths of each.
